A Polyglot Child (By Cosy)

Do you remember what we have learnt in our last tutorial class?

It is said that "As migrant languages are presented to an audience assumed to be mainstream monolingual, their use is unsurprisingly restricted to a few redundancy and visual context. However, their distribution among characters and parts of the plot reflects sociolinguistic stereotypes of migrant communities:

We witness the parent generation using the home language with each other and with their children, but the younger ones using (an ethnolect of) the majority language with each other."

To response to what the article said, I found a video which reported a 3-year-old little girl, who is from a bilingual family, can speak fluently in five different languages.

Here is the description of the video:

來看這位可愛的小女孩,高雄美濃一名台法混血兒,她從小就會說5種語言,因為她的爸爸是美國人、阿嬤是法國人、媽媽是台灣人、外婆又說台語,生活在美濃客家庄,鄰居都說客語,模仿力超強的她在耳濡目染之下,讓她中、英、法、台語、客語都聽得懂,也能應答如流,成為小小語言通!
Are you interested? Let's watch the video!

After watching this video, I wonder is it children who was born in a bilingual family will have higher language ability. I also wonder which culture this girl would adapt most and which language would be her main language. There is actually no certain answer. Do you have any ideas?

  1. Thanks for sharing! It's a good example to show what we have learnt recently! For me, I do think that children who born in bilingual families are more capable in language, because environment is a essential element in learning languages. That girl is immerses in a rich multilingual environment, she gets chances to practice different languages with her parents and grandparents, that's why she can speak five languages fluently.

  3. Thanks for sharing. I think that children from a bilingual/ multilingual family have higher language ability since they have more access to different languages. And through domestic communication, they can learn those languages naturally. I also wonder what is the girl's main language, but I guess it can be English since it is an international language that both of her parents can understand.

  4. This little girl looks so adorable, not to mention that she can speak five different languages, which makes her even cuter.
I would agree that language ability can be a gifted tanlent but the learning environment is a more important factor in training one's language ability. Like this little girl, she grows up in a multilingual environment that makes her captable in speaking five languages. In my point of view, I think that this girl would be influenced by the Taiwanese culture the most, as Taiwan is the palce where she grows up in. It is because most of the people she meets will be Taiwanese and the media she accesses will mainly be Taiwan media as well. Under this environment, she will be most influenced by the Taiwanese culture.
