The other day, we have discussed in class on how people of different accents are made into stereotype and been discriminated against. As a non-native English speaker, it is hard for me to tell if someone have an accent if not a heavy one. But then when I searched it online, there are actually pages referring it to the making-people-with-an-accent-a-wicked-villain-cliché and I found it kind of interesting… so here I am, sharing with you all.
Remember the villain in Iron Man 2? Ivan Vanko is a Russian. |
Farra Lankova, a Russian young woman, is paired up with Tak Mashido, the Japanese robot designer in Real Steel. |
Le Chiffre in Casino Royale is a ruthless and highly intelligent villain. |
However, not only a person with a heavy accent will be casted a villain. In Hollywood, actor/actress with a British accent can always be seen as an indication of coldblooded characters.
Khan in Star Trek Into Darkness has extreme physical strength. |
Loki in Thor is a trickster. |
Hannibal Lecter, the cannibal in The Silence of the Lambs. |
