初看Spinach
Cinema這一詞組，是不是有些困惑？spinach 是我們日常吃的菠菜，cinema指電影院或是電影，那麼spinach cinema 是什麼呢？難道是講有關“菠菜” 的電影嗎？
其實這一表達法特指某種電影，即： Movies that are not very exciting or interesting, but that one feels one must see because they are educational or otherwise uplifting（道德提升）.
原來，spinach cinema 是那種有教育意義、令人深思的電影。這類電影可能沒有好萊塢商業大片中常見的特技效果，不過觀眾看過以後，通常會感到自己的心靈多少受到一些觸動或感動，會聯想並深思一些有關社會、人生、信仰、感情、傢庭等方面的問題。下面的這兩段影評都提到了spinach cinema：

想想頗受兒童喜愛的卡通片《大力水手》（Popeye the Sailor Man），其中的主角卜派(Popeye)就是靠吃菠菜不斷地長大和強壯，並完成了一係列的探險和英雄壯舉。
看來，用spinach 來形容某類電影，其中的含義不言而喻。對許多人來說，奶油巧克力的一定比清水菠菜美味，但是長久而言，對身體更有益的一定是菠菜。因此，不時地看看這類電影，就好比定期攝取營養成分一樣，對人的身心一定有益。
除了用來形容電影之外，spinach 還可以用來形容其他的事物，例如：
spinach television / spinach book / eat-your-spinach literature
