As the sky darkens into the night
Memories, cold as the rain outside Pounding on my window Pouring into my mind My heart, is filled with thoughts of you Trapped within these painful walls Longing to be rescued Can't I travel back in time to be with you Just to feel you close Your arms wrapped around me Then, I'll know I'm alright Again Following, the dark and rainy road Looking back, to what our story holds Our love so pure and true Reminding me of you My eyes are filled with tears thinking of you Trapped within these painful walls Longing to be rescued Can't I travel back in time to be with you Just to feel you close Your arms wrapped around me Then, I'll know I'm alright Again Scattered in time All my memories of you You're by my side Don't let me go Can I travel back in time? Hold you here in my arms Just a chance to be with you For one last time If I have to live In this world without you Please, give me one last kiss? |
An interesting discovery: you may find that the world you imagine somehow match with the world pictured in the music video that illustrates the Korean version of the song!!!
Here, translation has definitely taken place, but it is obviously more than translation. Beyond the realm, there expands a spreading shine of power-- cultural influence. If language represents identity, then translation bridges two groups of people of different identities. Here a Korean version of lyrics is code-switched into the English depiction of the same imagery. We can see that the world is drawn by a different paint, but ultimately the artwork is more or less the same! The appearance of the English version interplays translation and cultural influence in a way that it bridges the Korean eye vision with the English one through code-switching translation. There, the people who knows English but not Korea can start to get in touch with Korean culture.
Here is the Chinese version of lyrics carrying thee same melody of the song.

The song here is used with a different lyrics. You can feel that the world it illustrates is a largely different world which paints love relationship in a more Hong Kong styled way for Hongkongers to understand culturally.
May we get BACK IN TIME to dip ourselves into the worlds translation created and feel the intensity of cultural difference.
Language is a tool that helps us express our feelings and it's quite interesting to see it on screen the translated languages project the same imagery as the original.
ReplyDeleteFor the Cantonese version, it should be minded that one should state whether his or her work is a piece of 'faithful translation' or 'creative translation'. Otherwise, it may mislead the audience, thinking that the original meaning of the song is about the hong kong styled love story.
It is interesting to look into different translations of this song and this song is new to me and its melody is nice!
ReplyDeleteI think the Korean and English lyrics were written in consistence in purpose so as to match the content of the TV series? Also, I dont understand Korean, but from the Chinese translation, I think the imagination given is much richer than the English one. The Chinese translation of the Korean seems quite good.
It is true that translation of songs help exchanging culture, like this case, is the spreading of Korean pop-music to the other parts of the world, since English is the most popular language in the world. Or, it is the spreading of Korea's soft power to the outside world and internationalize their culture building up their place in the world and restrengthening their identity in Asia as well as in the western world. You know, the song "Nobody" also has an English version which has gained high popularity in the US interestingly. Besides, not only the songs being translated can help cultural exchange, but also this can attracts more audience from other parts of the world to watch the Korean series to build up the status of the Korean TV entertainment industry!
Plus, for the Cantonese one, it is very nice also, yet, I dont really think it "paints love relationship in a more Hong Kong styled way for Hongkongers to understand [Korean culture (?)]", since clearly the Cantonese lyrics is another sad love story which has little relationship with the original one. Also, though I dont know the real intention of the lyrics composer (火火), this composer may write for the love story of Sita since I know Sita has a sad relationship and was hurt by a playboy. Her song 忘川 also reflects that. You may youtube more of her interviews to check whether the lyrics are really writtern for her, for her love affairs experience.
Best wishes~~
