Rewritten songs (By Wan Michelle)

In Hong Kong, there are many Cantonese pop songs which are rewritten from Japanese pop songs. As Japanese pop songs started to become popular during 1980s and 1990s, so Hong Kong local music industry started to adapt and remake those Japanese pop songs into Cantonese pop song. Those rewritten songs had Japanese pop melody and Cantonese lyrics and they became very popular in Hong Kong during 80s and 90s.

There were some example in the 80s and 90s:
1. 千千闕歌/夕陽之歌 =夕烧けの歌

2. 霧之戀 = FOR YOU

3. 風繼續吹 =さよならの向う侧

4. Monica =モニカ

Not only in80s and 90s, there are many rewritten songs nowadays and most of them are popular such as 給自己的信, 陰天假期 etc. I would like to introduce 給自己的信 to all of you.

In 2009, Sherman Chung sang a song called 給自己的信 which was rewrote from a Japanese pop song called手紙 ～拝啓 十五の君へ sang by Angela Aki. These two songs have the same melody but one is in Chinese lyrics and the other one is in Japanese lyrics. As the Chinese lyrics have to fit into the melody so the meanings of Cantonese song has a little bit different from the Japanese song.

I think rewriting the songs is a good way to promote music to different countries. The melody of the rewritten songs is easily memorized by the public. Moreover, people can listen the songs in their own language which make the songs become popular.
