I always think that writing Cantonese lyrics is particularly challenging, as Cantonese has nine tones. It is hard for lyricists to fill in the right words into a particular melody to make the song harmonic, otherwise the lyrics sound strange. Here is an example of a Cantonese song that is not harmonic:
Apart from tones, lyricists also need to write meaningful and sensible lyrics and make rhymes. For rewritten songs, lyricists tend to write lyrics that have similar themes as the original song. It is in fact like translating a song in a rhythmic way. So I think writing lyrics for a rewritten song is more challenging than writing lyrics for an original song. But below is a good example. The original song is "Laughter in the Rain" by Neil Sedaka, and the rewritten Cantonese song is 「沙沙的雨」by Anthony Lun (倫永亮) and David Lui (呂方). Both songs are about the happiness of walking in the rain with the singer's lover.
Laughter in the Rain
Strolling along country roads with my baby
It starts to rain, it begins to pour
Without an umbrella we're soaked to the skin
I feel a shiver run up my spine
I feel the warmth of her hand in mine
Oo, I hear laughter in the rain
Walking hand in hand with the one I love
Oo, how I love the rainy days
And the happy way I feel inside
After a while we run under a tree
I turn to her and she kisses me
There with the beat of the rain on the leaves
Softly she breathes and I close my eyes
Sharing our love under stormy skies
Oo, I hear laughter in the rain
Walking hand in hand with the one I love
Oo, how I love the rainy days
And the happy way I feel inside
I feel the warmth of her hand in mine
Oo, I hear laughter in the rain
Walking hand in hand with the one I love
Oo, how I love the rainy days
And the happy way I feel inside
Oo, I hear laughter in the rain
Walking hand in hand with the one I love
Oo, how I love the rainy days
And the happy way I feel inside
(repeat and fade)
There are many Cantonese songs that are rewritten from English or Japanese songs. But that doesn't mean that Chinese songs are inferior. An English song called "Take Me to Your Heart" by Michael Learns to Rock is in fact rewritten from Jacky Cheung's Chinese songs can also be popular in Western countries. Below are the lyrics:
Take Me To Your Heart
Hiding from the rain and snow
Trying to forget but I won't let go
Looking at a crowded street
Listening to my own heart beat
So many people all around the world
Tell me where do I find someone like you girl
(Chorus)
Take me to your heart take me to your soul
Give me your hand before I'm old
Show me what love is - haven't got a clue
Show me that wonders can be true
They say nothing lasts forever
We're only here today
Love is now or never
Bring me far away
Take me to your heart take me to your soul
Give me your hand and hold me
Show me what love is - be my guiding star
It's easy take me to your heart
Standing on a mountain high
Looking at the moon through a clear blue sky
I should go and see some friends
But they don't really comprehend
Don't need too much talking without saying anything
All I need is someone who makes me wanna sing
(Chorus)
Trying to forget but I won't let go
Looking at a crowded street
Listening to my own heart beat
So many people all around the world
Tell me where do I find someone like you girl
(Chorus)
Take me to your heart take me to your soul
Give me your hand before I'm old
Show me what love is - haven't got a clue
Show me that wonders can be true
They say nothing lasts forever
We're only here today
Love is now or never
Bring me far away
Take me to your heart take me to your soul
Give me your hand and hold me
Show me what love is - be my guiding star
It's easy take me to your heart
Standing on a mountain high
Looking at the moon through a clear blue sky
I should go and see some friends
But they don't really comprehend
Don't need too much talking without saying anything
All I need is someone who makes me wanna sing
(Chorus)
It was said that music is the common language of human. No matter in what language the songs are sung, good music can be appreciated by people with different languages. So rewritten songs is a medium for people with different languages to share local music.
I have once tried to rewrite the lyrics when I was in junior form. I also found that rewriting the lyrics in Cantonese is very difficult so I rewrote it in Putonghua instead. Therefore, I really appreciate those who can rewrite beautiful lyrics in Cantonese.
ReplyDeleteI agree that the rewritten songs are a medium to share the music from different countries. Even though the meanings of the rewritten lyrics are different from the original, I think the melody has already expressed certain kinds of feelings. Therefore, lyricists still need to write about the same theme as the original and this is certainly not an easy job.
