[極祕密]其實做毒L又有咩好怕wor by kenny Lau

話說一位LN師兄FB:
-----------
其實毒_一個更開心
駛_你講???

[巴黎之毒]
巴黎聖母院外的鎖橋,
身邊無個伴可以點?
巴黎毒_有辦法。

而正所謂毒_無彊界,
Mary

透過推PO&SHARE(以回應及轉載增加文章覆蓋面),以表其同理心。

Hong Kong Street Names (By Ng Sze Sze, Sabrina)

Translation can be found everywhere in our daily life. Have you noticed street name is also a part of translation? Though street names are short, we can also learn a lot from translation of them. Let’s see some street names in Chinese and English.

First, ‘’and ‘’ are not only translation of ‘road’. Here are some wordings which also mean ‘’and ‘’’.

1.      Avenue: the word is used when there are trees beside the roads. (e.g. Tat Chee Avenue達之道)

2.      Crescent: it describes roads in a curved shape. (e.g. Essex Crescent雅息士道)

3.      Incline: it tells the roads are inclined. (e.g. Jat’s Incline扎山道)

4.      Drive (e.g. Cotton Tree Road 紅綿路)

Similar to ‘’, ‘’ and ‘大道’, ‘’and ‘’ do not only mean ‘street’ and ‘path’. For example, the word ‘path’ is translated into ‘’and ‘’. ‘Steps’, ‘alley’, ‘rise’ and so on are translated into ‘’. From English street names, we can have basic understanding of features of streets. Yet, we can hardly find difference among streets from Chinese street names because they are similar.

Here is some interesting translation.
1.      Hammer Hill Road 斧山道
Hammer does not mean ‘’. It means ‘’. The word ‘Axe’ means ‘’.

2.      Public Square Street 眾坊街
Public Square Street used to be ‘公眾四方街’. This is an example of literal translation. However, the real meaning of ‘public square’ is ‘plaza’. The new translation眾坊街 is much more suitable.

3.      Power Street 大強街
The word ‘power’ should mean electric power because there was a power station. But again, the translator used literal translation and did not consider the environment so the ‘power’ was translated into ‘’ which usually refers to strength.

4.      Lion Rock Road獅子石道
Lion Rock means ‘獅子山’, but ‘Rock’ was translated into ‘’ directly.

Do you have any other ideas about street names? Or do you think they are good translation?

Lost in Translation ( Poetry Translation) by Chung Wai Yee. Minnie

Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening (1923)
--Robert Frost
This is one of my favorite English poems ever, composed by celebrated American author, Robert Frost , written  in plain, everyday language, tells a simple, short episode of life, yet it explores deep philosophical themes  in life. Here are the different Chinese translations  I can find of it, let's  compare them with each other.

Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound’s the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark, and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

谁家的林,我想我知道。
虽然他家要在村里找;

暗夜飘雪似飞花,林木繁茂知谁家;
    村中林主君未见,停马赏景尚有暇。

    良驹想必应称奇,农家远离驻足地。
    独是一年昏暗夜,密林冰湖相偎依。

    宝马奋铃心茫然,欲问何故滞林间;
    轻风拂面万籁静,唯有雪花漫天旋。

    美林深幽天色昏,履约还须赴前程。
    路途遥遥难入梦,愁煞风雪夜归人!

雪夜过寒林-四联绝句体译

我心知是哪家林, 远有人居傍小村
擅自停车意难止, 原来披雪最销魂

四下无人我自知, 暂停归路马迟迟
银湖玉树谁欲静, 夜色一年唯此时

空林寂寂响鸾铃, 似问缘何在此停
除却轻风无天籁, 枝间尽是雪来声

林深林暗惹心开, 一诺千金兀自来
此去求眠路多少, 归程多少计难哉

韓國「食聊」- BY Wing Kwok

Leftover Women

EastSouthWestNorth is a great website where you can find some in-depth article that focus on the problem of Chinese society. “ Hong Kong’s Troubling Shortage of Men” http://www.theatlantic.com/china/archive/2013/12/hong-kongs-troubling-shortage-of-men/281942/ ( accessed on 21/02/2014)
is one of the work post on the The Atlantic written by a foreign freelance writer who try to present the marriage situation in Hong Kong by showing lot of Chinese ways of expressions and culture features to the English readers that have limited contact to Chinese society.

I would like to have a brief analyze on this article using the concepts we have learned from class. First of all, we can easily find that in order to improve the credibility of the information, the writer had referred to many statements from the local citizens such as a public relations adviser, a professional researcher from Chinese University in Hong Kong or common people like Miss Phoebe. By translating their words into English revealed the real situation in Hong Kong which may be different to other part of the world.

For example, from the words of Miss Phoebe “ Most of my single girl friends are all panicking about finding their other half now because men have a tendency to favor younger girls,” she explains. “Asian men seem to be attracted to girls around 25 rather than girls over 30, so if we don't find the right man soon, our chances of meeting a future partner will get slimmer. we learned a typical culture from Asia that is different to the Western culture that men tend to like younger girls and single women who are in their late 20s or early 30s will be branded as “leftover women” or “shengnü which is a use of language mixing in this piece of work.

Furthermore, as it is reported by the Dr.Suzanne Choi that due to Chinese traditional marriage norm of men marrying down and women marrying up, “some men may be unable to find a local wife due to their comparative socioeconomic disadvantages. But some may also want to find a wife with lower qualifications and earning power anyway, so they can conform to social expectations” , it is a use of culture bricolage that let more people without this value or norm in mind get to understand the phenomenon in Hong Kong.

At last, it also talked about the famous TV series in Hong Kong Bride Wannabes and use the word of “ Love Coach” which is also used in western countries to shorten the distance between readers and Hong Kong by re-contextualizing and it not only gave people an inner look on this issue but also disclosed a beauty standard in Hong Kong which is that women are expected of double eyelid.

In a word, it is a very nice piece of article that worth reading and learning from. It exposed the marriage market and problem in Hong Kong in an exact way and throw out a social issue that we all need to think of. I think that might be more points in it can be analyzed by the concepts we have learned from class that I have not covered. Would you find more about it and leave your commend? Tips: you may also find articles on the same topic through other channels such as BBC News or New York Times, ect.

從紅樓夢看中英翻譯的難處 (一) By Mandy Tse Tsz Yan

1. Still green the smoke from tea brewed in a rare tripod,Yet cold the fingers from chess played by quiet window.
 楊憲益,戴乃迭譯文

2. From the empty cauldron the steam still rises after the brewing of tea,by the darkening window the fingers are still cold after the game of go.
David Hawks

Selfie (By Laura Li)

Selfie衍生字:

helfie」(自拍頭髮)

belfie」(自拍臀部)

drelfie」(自拍醉酒樣子/「喝茫」樣)

drunken selfie」(醉酒自拍)

workout selfie」(運動自拍)

以下為部分過往年份的風雲單字,它們最能反映每年的時代脈搏與氛圍,大眾可在從中看到現今社會變化及話題。

2012年:omnishambles」(全面失控)

2011年:squeezed middle(受壓榨的中產階級)(英美版)

Google

「FOMO」:Fear of Missing out的縮寫,指對自己趕不上潮流的焦慮。

美國人的解讀是「放我一馬」(「Cut me some slack」)。中國網友卻說:該詞常出現在網友回帖中,樓主說出殘酷的真相,回帖網友感同身受,但沒法面對,所以含糊其辭。聽來像是電影《手機》中的台詞「做人要厚道」。

最後,大家不妨猜測一下2014年度的風雲單字會是什麼?希望大家會喜歡我的分享。^^
